Synopsis

When Todd, a developmentally challenged young man still living on his parents' Kansas farm, hears that a local animal shelter is seeking temporary homes for its dogs during the holiday week, he knows exactly what he wants for Christmas. Animals are Todd's first love, and his persistence quickly overwhelms his father's objections to befriending a canine, a reluctance that proves to have a painful origin. The family takes in a very special animal, and the shelter's Christmas adoption programme soon grows larger than anyone had hoped. By the story's end, Todd, with the help of a dog named Christmas, has taught an entire community the transformative power of goodwill and shared love - a lesson for all seasons.

Review

A Dog called Christmas is such a lovely story for Christmas Time, especially as Todd manages to get the community behind him to all take dogs from the animal shelter.

Todd is a young person who has a disability problem - having read the book it's not actually stated but I'm sure he is autistic,  he just shows certain traits that I recognise in autistic people I have met. Being completly focused on the task in hand he just seems to know how to look for the right dog for his house for Christmas.  But the dog he chooses is not really meant for him and it turns out it's for his dad!

This short book by Greg Kincaid is wonderfully writen, fantastic storyline and just such a simple but a beautiful Christmas Story with a difference.
